This past weekend was a stressful yet exciting one. I sat the Georgia State Licensing Board’s 2-part, 6 hour exam to become a licensed General Contractor for my family’s construction and developing company. For years out of college and before working in television home improvement, I was my dad’s right hand gal for building his 65,000-80,000 SF office buildings. After shifting into television, I wasn’t able to do as much work for him due to scheduling and such. In 2008, the state laws changed in Georgia regarding who could pull permits and oversee jobs ranging from residential to unlimited commercial projects. After much discussion, my father asked if I would consider coming back to help him by getting my GC license with no limitations on projects that I could build. I took up the challenge and after weeks and weeks of studying, sitting a prep class and taking sample tests to prepare, I took the Law portion of the test on Friday (50 questions) and the Trades portion of the test of Saturday (100 questions). I am happy to report that I passed both tests missing only five questions total for both tests. I am thrilled to pieces and so is my dad (and that’s the best part of all!)

I feel battered and bruised but it has been well worth it! To see some of the progress, go to my Jodi Marks Facebook Home Improvement Page.
One of the best things I did to make the painting project go faster and smoother was to tape of with painter’s tape…but not just any painter’s tape…FROG TAPE!
I have highlighted Frog Tape on Today’s Homeowner as well as on several Satellite Media Tours and I really am impressed with how great it works. The PaintBlock technology is truly amazing…the tape actually absorbs the paint and PREVENTS it from getting up under the tape! How you ask? Check out their website: www.frogtape.com to find out more!

And nothing makes more sense to me than taking something, like a lamp base, and giving it a facelift so it can be recycled back into your home decor’ and enjoyed again. That is exactly what I did using the HAMMERED series from Rust-oleum. The spray paint comes in a slew of color choices, but my favorites are the metal finishes: bronze, silver, nickel, copper, and gold. The textured surface, when it dries, looks just like hammered metal. It can be applied directly to wood, metal, masonry, ceramics, and plaster. No priming is needed, just clean the surface and you are ready to go. And because it’s from Rust-oleum, you can spray it right over rusted areas on metal surfaces.

I keep waking up thinking that it is going to be sunny and 65 degrees outside! I am ready for Spring and most importantly, Summer!

Growing up in Georgia, I am not used to feeling the cold, wet chill of snow and ice. I know we Atlantans have had our share of snow days and wintery ice storms, but I can’t recall in recent memory a winter like this one…brrr!

You know the old adage: if you can’t fight ‘em, join ‘em. So, with camera in hand, I set out to grab a neat photo or two of the winter creations. I am no photographer, but I thought this one was pretty cool. It is of my front porch downspout that I ordered online from Target. It’s very pretty when the water cascades down it, but Old Man Winter took it a step further. I guess even though winter can chilly you to the bone, it still has the undeniable ability to inspire.

This week has shown us a tragedy beyond recent compare. With the death toll rising and supplies becoming scarce, if not already depleted, thousands more might perish. For time is of the essence for these helpless folks.

With the outpour of relief available to make donations, I went on-line to see what programs were out there to help in getting aid to this desperate country.

Here are just a few:

Doctors without Borders
www.doctorswithoutborders.org

Catholic Relief Services
www.crs.org

Samaritan’s Purse
www.samaritanspurse.org

The American Red Cross
You can make a $10 donation that will be added to your mobile phone bill by texting the word HAITI to the number 90999. Once your text has been sent you will receive a verification text, free of charge, asking you to confirm your donation.

Please copy and paste this info to an email if you like to send to your family and friends.

God bless those in Haiti and anyone who is suffering today.

Thanks,
Jodi
